Also known as a nose job, rhinoplasty is the surgical procedure that can correct a variety of nasal abnormalities or incongruences, for both cosmetic and medical reasons. It is performed by surgically reshaping the cartilage and bones of the nose to produce an aesthetically pleasing, natural looking nose. Rhinoplasty can dramatically transform an individual’s appearance creating harmony with other facial features while complementing overall beauty and function.
The nose is such a prominent feature of the face that it’s impossible to ignore. Unfortunately, some noses develop disproportionately to the other facial features or have been damaged by trauma, causing individuals to feel self-conscious and possibly insecure. Noses can be too large, too small, too flat, too pointy or all out crooked and poorly functioning. Many individuals also feel that their unsightly nose distracts from other attractive aspects of who they are and seek out rhinoplasty to correct these undesirable features.
Rhinoplasty can effectively transform:
- A crooked nose
- A disproportionately large or disproportionately small nose
- A pronounced hump on the bridge of the nose
- A droopy or upturned nose tip
- A too wide or too narrow nose
- A too rounded nose tip
- A deviated septum or other abnormality interfering with breathing
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation for comfort. Incisions are often hidden inside the nose, or discretely across the columella, that narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils. The skin over the nose is gently raised to allow for the reshaping and adjustments to be made. Once the changes are made, the incisions are closed and patients are sent home with splints and possibly gauze packing to support the nose as the healing process begins. Swelling and bruising can be expected following the procedure but should improve daily.
A properly performed rhinoplasty can be dramatically life-changing on so many dimensions. It can restore proper functioning while adding beauty and overall cosmetic transformation. In the right hands, rhinoplasty is often a rewarding and worthwhile experience improving not only appearance and function but can also greatly enhance self-confidence and even relationships.
