Otoplasty

Very few, if any of us have perfectly symmetrical or aligned ears but for some, the irregularities are painfully obvious.  Otoplasty is a popular cosmetic procedure done to correct incongruences of the ears (Dumbo Ears) .  Individuals of all ages undergo cosmetic ear surgery for various reasons but it is fairly common in young children (over the age of five) whose parents want to spare them the cruel teasing that can sadly occur on the school playground.  Even the slightest adjustment by otoplasty can drastically change one’s appearance and cause a huge boost in confidence, changing the lives of many kids and even adults who decide to undergo cosmetic ear surgery later in life.

Otoplasty is performed by making small, barely noticeable incisions behind the ear(s) under intravenous sedation, local or general anesthesia.  The incisions are typically done within the natural folds found behind the ears which are perfect hiding places for scars.  Once the incision has been made, skin and cartilage can be removed or shaped accordingly.  The skin is then stitched up in a way that optimizes healing and the overall appearance of the ears.  Reattaching and tightening the skin behind the ears is often done to also correct the “dumbo” appearance and is known as pinning of the ears.

Most individuals who undergo cosmetic ear surgery are able to go home the same day unless other surgeries are planned or medical necessities require an overnight stay in the hospital.  These arrangements are typically discussed in the pre-operative appointments leading up to the surgery.  While recovery from cosmetic ear surgery is relatively short compared to other cosmetic procedures, it is important that all post-procedure instructions are followed.  These usually include rest for the first week or two, fluids and keeping the head elevated which often means sleeping in a recliner or significantly propped up in bed.  Most adults can return to work in 1-2 weeks.

Otoplasty is an extremely rewarding and fulfilling procedure for both patient and physician.  Final results are almost visible within the first few days and it is exciting to see the positive transformation it has on an individual’s appearance as well as confidence.  If you are interested in learning more about otoplasty and how it could change your life for the better, contact one our offices today.
