When wrinkles, folds and creases develop due to decreased tissue mass from weight loss or age, dermal fillers can literally fill the gap. Also known as soft tissue fillers, dermal fillers restore a plump, healthy and youthful appearance to the face by replacing lost tissue volume and smoothing out deep wrinkles. Areas of the face, neck and hands are commonly treated with dermal fillers as they can visibly age individuals who lost volume due to age or other reasons. Some of the most common areas treated by dermal fillers include the space between the eyebrows (a.k.a. glabellar lines), the forehead, the cheeks, the nasolabial folds (those parentheses lines that come down from the nose around the mouth) and the chin.
Dermal fillers can remarkably change one’s image and can even positively affect relationships and approachability. For example, frown lines between the eyebrows can often create a look of a constant exhaustion or irritation. However, when fillers are injected into those deep vertical lines, they fill in the creases creating a happier, refreshed and more approachable look. Additional improvement in those lines can occur when fillers are used with Botox© to relax the muscles underneath the skin, helping to prevent further contraction and furrowing. Fillers can provide similar results with the deep, horizontal creases of the forehead.
Dermal fillers can also restore youth and add a refreshed look to the areas under the eyes and around the cheeks. Unfortunately, with aging, the area below the eyes can become sunken causing deep, dark depressions to develop. Injecting dermal fillers into this area adds volume, plumpness and creates a rested, healthy appearance that can take years off one’s face. A similar effect can happen underneath the cheeks. Fatty tissue starts to diminish and cheek bones become accentuated causing a gaunt, aged appearance. Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Voluma can easily fill in the area, bringing life and rejuvenation to the face and overall image.
Dermal fillers ideal for reducing the appearance of nasolabial folds, those parentheses around the mouth. Nasolabial creases are one of the more visible signs of aging and just a little added volume in this area can easily restore youthfulness to the face. Dermal fillers are also great at reducing the appearance of marionette lines, named after the lines seen on the chins of wooden puppets that allow their mouths to open and close. In addition to the uses described above, dermal fillers are also used to in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty and other surgeries that may require additional fillers to smooth out or fill in irregular contours or other asymmetries.
